What's New in iOS 18.1 Beta 4 For All Devices

Apple today released iOS 18.1 Beta 4 for developers, and this update is available for all devices compatible with iOS 18, no longer limited to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. However, Apple Intelligence is still only available on supported devices.

In case you missed it, here are the features included in iOS 18.1 Beta 3 →

Here are all the new features and changes I’ve discovered in iOS 18.1 Beta 4 so far.

Pause Video Recording

iOS 18.1 Beta 4 also adds a pause button while recording video, similar to the earlier iOS 18 release.

Edit Video Speed

You can now adjust the speed for high frame rate videos in the Photos app, a feature that was previously added in iOS 18 for other iPhone models, not just the iPhone 16.

Siri Suggestions

In iOS 18.1 Beta 4, Siri now shows context-based suggestions when you type.

Control Center

Connectivity section in Control Center has an updated design in iOS 18.1 Beta 4.

Bigger Emojis Keyboard

Some users report that the emojis on the keyboard are now larger in iOS 18.1 Beta 4. However, for me, this change has been present since the first iOS 18.1 Beta.

Apple first introduced this change in iOS 18 Beta 3 but then removed it in iOS 18 Beta 4 and later versions. Many users dislike the larger emoji keyboard and think it should be an option they can adjust in the settings. What do you think?

Expands Phone Call Recording

iOS 18.1 Beta 4 also expands support for call recording and transcription to older iPhones (previously, this feature required an iPhone with Apple Intelligence). Now, iPhone XR, iPhone XS and later can record calls, while iPhone 12 and later can both record calls and generate transcriptions saved in the Notes app.

Please note that AI-generated transcript summaries are only available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models.

Spatial Mode

Apple introduced spatial photo capture for the entire iPhone 16 lineup, and with iOS 18.1 Beta 4, they’re expanding it to the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Previously, the iPhone 15 Pro could only record spatial videos.

There’s a new Spatial option in the Camera app, allowing you to quickly switch between spatial photo and video modes.

Calculator

In iOS 18.1 Beta 4, the calculation history in the Calculator app now appears from the bottom of the screen instead of the left side.

RCS Messaging in China

9to5mac has reported that some mobile carriers in China are currently testing RCS messaging on iPhones through iOS 18.1 Beta.

These carriers include:

  • China Unicom
  • China Telecom
  • China Mobile

To check if your carrier supports RCS messaging, go to Settings - Apps - Messages. If you see the RCS Messaging option, it means that your carrier currently supports RCS on iPhones.

Printing Status in Dynamic Island

The current printing status is now also displayed in the Dynamic Island.

New Siri Setup

Not new in iOS 18.1 Beta 4 since it was added in Beta 2 or 3, but I didn’t mention this change in previous posts, so I’ll include it here.
